Marine House and Steam Gallery (Beer EX12 3JB ): Informal, innovative and always with a surprise or three in store, this is one of the best independent galleries in Devon. From traditional oils, to eye-opening sculpture, ceramics and jewellery we guarantee you will find something to covet in the displays here. Malthouse and Courtyard Galleries (The Town Mill, Lyme Regis DT7 3PU): You might associate this Jurassic Coast town with the ancient beauty of fossils and rocks, but it is also a superb place for anyone with an interest in contemporary art. Founded in 2010, this pretty site is a hub for a whole collection of local artists including some of the very best in the region. Kennaway House (Sidmouth EX10 8NG): Another hidden art gem, this elegant seaside town has art galleries galore and so much to discover. Just outside the centre of the town, however, you’ll find one of the most interesting selections of all in this community run hub of local creativity. Established artists run shoulders with raw, emerging local talent here, while you’ll also find some of the most interesting short courses in East Devon, from life drawing to novel writing. The Thelma Hubert Gallery (Honiton EX14 1LT): An ever changing variety of art in all major forms, this is one of the best places in east Devon to showcase the region’s current and past talent. Current highlights include a fascinating retrospective look at the work of pioneering early 20th century photographer Karl Blossveldt.
